At Hologic, we look throughout our supply chain to mitigate upstream risk and seek out partners who do the same. Our focus has been on our upstream value chain, where we establish policies that ensure environmental compliance and social responsibility. This is one of the many ways that we ensure alignment with applicable supply chain regulations, standards and directives. Our third conflict minerals SEC filing was completed in May, and was based on 356 supplier survey responses. Our response rate improved to 73%.
We ask our partners to uphold the same high standards of corporate social responsibility that we do ourselves. To that end, we are developing a Supplier Environmental and Social Responsibility Code of Conduct Policy. This will promote awareness among suppliers about Hologic’s sustainability efforts while helping reduce our sustainability risks.
Successes to Date
Our partners recognize the value of a sustainable supply chain:
- A potential imaging supplier provided details about REACH compliance and their efforts to improve sustainability throughout their product life cycle via waste elimination.
- Our global sourcing team reviewed a label substrate supplier’s initiatives to improve environmental impact in their value chain during a quarterly business update. The dialogue addressed product life cycle analysis, production process improvements, and reductions in water, energy and CO2.
- A major transportation provider presented their efforts to minimize environmental impact through responsible and resourceful practices. Highlights included fuel efficiency and CO2 reductions in air freight, employing a clean diesel ground fleet, use of rail freight as efficient alternatives to ground, and diversion of more than 120 million pounds of packaging and waste materials from landfills over the last decade.
We intend to formalize internal policies and procedures for managing and reporting on conflict minerals, REACH and RoHS compliance. We plan to develop strategic supplier plans for compliance audits based on a survey of sustainable practices, including ISO 14000/14001 certification status and compliance with global regulations like REACH/RoHS. Finally, we expect to implement Supplier Sustainability Scorecards that will evaluate adherence to the Supplier Environmental and Social Responsibility Code of Conduct Policy.
